Picturesque place with panoramic views of Greece...
Ayvalik is situated in the North-West region of the Aegean in close proximity to Greece, and surrounded by 24 small islands which can be easily reached by boat. Ayvalik's surroundings consist mainly of olive tree plantations, pine forests and unspoilt, natural surroundings. Ayvalik is far removed from mass tourism and large hotel chains.
Its beaches, as well as those of Sarimsakli and other nearby beach coves, are perfect for swimming and snorkelling.
The city has very good transport connections with the nearby Greek island of Lesbos. You are most welcome to come along to the Thursday market in Ayvalik, where you can hear people bargaining in both Greek and Turkish.
The town's history is closely connected with that of the Greeks, which is most obvious in the architecture of the old part of town with its beautiful houses. Ayvalik is also said to be one of the best places in Turkey to eat fish. It is easy to understand why, when you see all the many small restaurants in the harbour.
